Anti-Harassment Policy

The LIFE is Good Unschooling Conference is dedicated to providing a harassment-free conference experience for everyone, regardless of race, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, neurotype, ability, physical appearance, body size, age, religion or socio-economic status. We do not tolerate harassment of conference participants in any form. Sexual language and imagery is not appropriate for any conference venue, including talks. Exception: Discussion or images related to sex, pornography, discriminatory language, or similar is welcome if it meets all of the following criteria: (a) the organizers have specifically granted permission in writing, (b) it is necessary to the topic of discussion and no alternative exists, (c) it is presented in a respectful manner, especially towards women and LGBTQIA people, (d) attendees are warned in advance in the program and respectfully given ample warning and opportunity to leave beforehand. This exception specifically does not allow use of gratuitous sexual images as attention-getting devices or unnecessary examples.

Conference participants violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled from the conference without a refund at the discretion of the conference organizers.

Harassment includes, but is not limited to:

A. Offensive comments (or verbal comments that reinforce social structures of domination) related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, mental illness, neuro(a)typicality, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion

B. Unwelcome comments regarding a person’s lifestyle choices and practices, including those related to food, health, parenting, drugs, and employment.

C. Deliberate misgendering or use of ‘dead’ or rejected names

D. Gratuitous or off-topic sexual images or behavior in spaces where they’re not appropriate

E. Physical contact and simulated physical contact (eg, textual descriptions like “*hug*” or “*backrub*”) without consent or after a request to stop.

F. Threats of violence

G. Deliberate intimidation

H. Stalking or following

I. Harassing photography or recording, including logging online activity for harassment purposes

J. Sustained disruption of presentations, discussions, or other events

K. Unwelcome sexual attention

L. Pattern of inappropriate social contact, such as requesting/assuming inappropriate levels of intimacy with others

M. Continued one-on-one communication after requests to cease

N. Deliberate “outing” of any aspect of a person’s identity without their consent.

O. Publication of non-harassing private communication

P. Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior

Enforcement

Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.

Exhibitors in the expo hall, sponsor or vendor booths, or similar activities are also subject to the anti-harassment policy.

If a participant engages in harassing behavior, event organizers retain the right to take any actions to keep the event a welcoming environment for all participants. This includes warning the offender or expulsion from the conference with no refund.

Event organizers may take action to redress anything designed to, or with the clear impact of, disrupting the event or making the environment hostile for any participants.

We expect participants to follow these rules at all event venues and event-related social activities. We think people should follow these rules outside event activities too!

Reporting

If someone makes you or anyone else feel unsafe or unwelcome, please report it as soon as possible to Staff member or a Harmony Holder. Harmony Holders and Staff members can be identified by buttons and/or ribbons on their name badges. If you are being harassed by someone, notice that someone else is being harassed or have any other concerns, please contact a Harmony Holder or Staff member, either personally or anonymously as outlined below.

If the person who is harassing you is a Harmony Holder or Staff member, they will be recused from handling your incident. Conference policy violations, including harassment, reduce the value of our event for everyone. We want you to be happy at our event. People like you make our event a better place.

This anti-harassment policy applies to the LIFE is Good Unschooling Conference, but if you are being harassed by a member of the LIG community outside of our conference, we still want to know about it.

We will take all reports of harassment by LIG members seriously. This includes harassment outside our conference and harassment that took place at any point in time.

We reserve the right to exclude people from the conference based on their past behavior, including behavior outside the conference and behavior towards people who are not conference attendees.

We will respect confidentiality requests for the purpose of protecting victims of abuse.

At our discretion, we may publicly name a person about whom we’ve received harassment complaints, or privately warn third parties about them, if we believe that doing so will increase the safety of conference attendees and/or the general public.

We will not name harassment victims without their affirmative consent.

You can make a report either personally or anonymously.

Anonymous Report

You can make an anonymous report by writing it down and placing it in the complaint box at the registration table to be checked by Harmony Holders and Staff regularly.

We can’t follow up an anonymous report with you directly, but we will fully investigate it and take whatever action is necessary to prevent a recurrence.

Personal Report

You can make a personal report by:

1. Calling or messaging this phone number: 971-361-9987 This phone number will be continuously monitored for the duration of the event.

2. Contacting a Harmony Holder or Staff member, identified by HH buttons or STAFF ribbons attached to name badges.

When taking a personal report, our staff will ensure you are safe and cannot be overheard. They may involve other event staff to ensure your report is managed properly. Once safe, we’ll ask you to tell us about what happened. This can be upsetting, but we’ll handle it as respectfully as possible, and you can bring someone to support you. You won’t be asked to confront anyone and we won’t tell anyone who you are.

Our team will be happy to help you contact hotel/venue security, local law enforcement, local support services, provide escorts, or otherwise assist you to feel safe for the duration of the event. We value your attendance.
